Having rewatched Thunderbolts* following its release on Disney+, there’s still one memorable quote from Valentina Allegra de Fontaine that doesn’t actually make sense for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following appearances in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Julia Louis-Dreyfus returned as CIA Director Valentina in Thunderbolts*. The film revealed that Valentina also led the OXE Group, responsible for enhancing Robert Reynolds into the Sentry, and she established the new Mightiest Hero’s base of operations in the former Avengers Tower.

While the reveal of Valentina taking over Avengers Tower was a great payoff after years of mystery, her exchange with the Thunderbolts in the new Watchtower was confusing. After the team’s arrival, before they reunited with Reynolds (Lewis Pullman), Valentina reminded them of “all the monumental fights” that happened in Avengers Tower before she took it over. This doesn’t make sense, however, as there have only been two major fights that have occurred in the New York landmark since it debuted in 2012’s The Avengers, which hardly constitutes so much surprise.
What Monumental Fights Have Happened in the MCU’s Avengers Tower?

Valentina’s comment about “all the monumental fights” seems to imply that there have been countless battles that have taken place in Avengers Tower, but this simply isn’t the case. The landmark was first introduced as Stark Tower in The Avengers, where several members of the newly-formed Avengers team battled Loki (Tom Hiddleston) during the Battle of Earth. Loki’s fights against Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk all took place during the same event, which certainly was monumental, especially since the God of Mischief used the building’s arc reactor as the power source for his intergalactic portal.
After the Avengers defeated Loki in Stark Tower, they redesigned the building as Avengers Tower, their new base of operations. 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron marked the team’s battle against several Iron Legion drones that had been taken over by the artificial intelligence of the tyrannical and genocidal Ultron (James Spader). This battle was then taken to the fictional Eastern European nation of Sokovia, far away from Avengers Tower, which saw no further battles before the Thunderbolts went toe-to-toe with the Sentry and lost miserably in their 2025 movie.
Two “monumental fights” don’t really constitute an “all the…” from Valentina in Thunderbolts*, and the fact that only two battles took place in Avengers Tower is surprising for us, too. The landmark will likely become the location of several other major fights in the MCU’s future, as it’s now the base of the New Avengers team, and will return as such in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday. Adding a battle between the New Avengers and Doctor Doom to this list would make it more of an “all the…” situation, so Valentina’s words will hopefully soon come to fruition.
