Apple TV+ has a number of great shows in its lineup, but few have broken through quite like Foundation. After a relatively rocky road in the creation of Foundation season 3, the series debuted its third season to critical acclaim, and the good news is the journey is continuing with a recently confirmed season 4. While the show is returning, there will be one big change in the mix when it eventually returns to TV.

Apple TV+ has officially ordered a fourth season of Foundation just ahead of season 3’s season finale (via THR). When the show returns, there will be a key change, as David Kob will join Ian Goldberg as co-showrunners of the show moving forward. This is the latest change to the showrunner position, as previous showrunner David S. Goyer departed the show with season 3.
“There is no series quite like Foundation, and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four,” Goldberg and Kob said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional, storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to be working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business.”
Head of Programming at Apple TV+ Matt Cherniss said, “It’s been fantastic to watch Foundation become such a global phenomenon, with fans tuning in from every corner of the world. With each new season, the excitement around this trailblazing sci-fi epic just keeps building due to the bold storytelling and collective artistry of this extraordinarily talented cast and creative team. We’re excited to keep exploring this universe together in season four.”
Season 3 Reception
Foundation has been one of the biggest hits yet for Apple TV+, a series that is based on Isaac Asimov’s hit novels. Currently, season 1 holds a 72% Rotten Tomatoes score amongst critics and a 65% audience score, but both scores spiked with season 2, which currently holds a 100% critical rating and 76% audience score.
Season 3 is still airing, but despite the myriad of production issues, it has delivered another stellar showing. Foundation season 3 holds a 90% critical rating and a series high audience score with 78%. Now we know there will be a fourth season, and one can only expect season 4 to keep the strong ratings trend going.
Foundation seasons 1 through 3 are now streaming on Apple TV+. Foundation season 4 currently holds no release date.
