The residents of South Park, Colorado, never have an easy go of it. Despite being a small town with little influence, terrible events always seem to make their way west. Some of the highlights include a giant guinea pig invasion, a massive gang war, and alien abductions. However, through it all, Stan Marsh and Co. push through the pain and go back to their normal lives. Well, it’s more like they forget everything that’s happened to them because they’re all stuck in the same place forever. The years start to blur together, and while the stories change, the results in South Park more or less stay the same.

Randy Marsh can start a weed farm, and Mr. Garrison can become president, but South Park‘s kids still get the short end of the stick. Sometimes, they even turn on each other because it’s a dog-eat-dog world. There’s one child who has it much worse than any other, though, so it should come as no surprise that they’re the focus of South Park‘s most depressing episode.
Butters Stotch Finally Joins the Cool Kid Club in South Park Season 7

The core group in South Park is comprised of Stan, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick. The four of them spend most days together, fighting whatever battles the show throws their way. However, they can get under each other’s skin, especially when Cartman is having one of his meltdowns. Being 10 years old doesn’t stop Cartman from terrorizing his close friends, with his main target being Kyle, with whom he doesn’t get along whatsoever. Cartman’s antics come back to bite him in Season 7, Episode 11, “Casa Bonita,” when Kyle invites Stan, Kenny, and Butters Stotch to accompany him to the titular adventure restaurant. Kyle explains that Cartman doesn’t deserve to go, but that doesn’t sit right with the blue-hat-wearing child.
In order to secure a seat at the table, Cartman convinces Butters that a meteor is heading toward Earth and that he needs to stay in a bomb shelter. Butters trusts his friend, so he follows directions and stays put. The disappearance of a child puts the whole town on edge, though, so the Casa Bonita trip gets canceled for a few days. Eventually, though, Cartman gets his wish, and even though the truth comes to light shortly after arriving at the restaurant, he’s just happy to have the opportunity to cliff dive. Meanwhile, Butters has to live through a traumatic event after finally thinking he’s made the big leagues. There aren’t many worse experiences as a kid than feeling unwanted by friends, and Butters deals with his fair share of that. Unfortunately, he remains trusting and continues to eat out of Cartman’s hand.
Cartman Is Still Taking Advantage of Butters All These Years Later

Cartman is an expert at making his friends mad, so he frequently turns to Butters in times of need. Butters, of course, just wants to feel like he belongs, and if Cartman is extending an olive branch, he’s going to take it. The problem is that Cartman is always ready to get his buddy into trouble, even going as far as to fake his death along with the other boys in Season 9, Episode 9, “Marjorine.” However, there’s another episode in that season that proves how little Cartman cares about Butters. After upsetting his friends by eating all of the skin off of KFC chicken, Cartman is in the doghouse, so everyone ignores him. The removal of the toilets from his house makes Cartman believe he’s dead, which is pretty on-brand.
Butters doesn’t go along with the ruse, and instead of realizing what’s going on, Cartman pushes further into his delusion and starts going off the deep end. When a hostage situation begins in South Park, Cartman forces Butters to help him save the day by sneaking the hostages out while he acts like a ghost. The plan works, but it could have easily gone wrong. Butters will continue to star in South Park‘s most depressing episodes until he realizes that Cartman isn’t good for him and he’s better off finding friends who actually care about him.
South Park is streaming on Paramount+.
