Ghost of Yotei, the upcoming sequel to 2020โs hit action game Ghost of Tsushima, is now less than a month away from its release date. While waiting for the game to come out, fans have been theorizing how the new title, which is set 300 years in the future, might connect to the original game. Back in July, during PlayStationโs State of Play, observant fans spotted nods to Ghost of Tsushima, one of which was Jinโs helmet, which suggested that the new protagonist, Atsu, might be connected to Jin and the Sakai clan in some way.

However, in a new rapid-fire style interview with MinnMax, Ghost of Yotei co-director Nate Fox shot down this fan theory, explicitly confirming that the new gameโs protagonist is not related to Jin and has not even heard of him before. While this makes sense, given the large gap of time between the two games, it seems that Ghost of Yotei will not be relying much on the past game for its lore.
How Ghost of Yotei Connects to Tsushima
MinnMax interviewer Ben Hanson directly asked Fox in the interview about both Atsu’s relation and knowledge of Jin. Since it was a rapid style interview, Fox gave a simple โnoโ to both answers. However, when asked whether Jin was a legend in the world of Ghost of Yotei, Fox instead opted to do a gag sip of his mug, implying that Jin might still be mentioned in the story, though probably not in a major way. This seems to be confirmed by the answer to the next question, in which Fox denied that anybody in the new game will directly reference the events of Ghost of Tsushima.
In fact, according to Fox, the Ghost of Yotei story will be so untethered that either ending of Ghost of Tsushima could be interpreted to have happened.
โItโs 300 years-plus later. Both endings are valid,โ Fox said.
Iโm glad that Ghost of Yotei is being given the creative freedom to move on from the story of Tsushima, giving fans something to look forward to without any of the baggage or expectations. This is part of the reason I believe the Souls games have been successful: there is usually something completely new to explore in the world every time.
However, part of me still wants to be told what the official ending was for Jin. Hopefully, the new game will at least, in some subtle way, let players know how Jin lived out the rest of his life, and if he found peace in his older years. The follow-up story we got in the form of the Iki Island DLC shows how Jin was able to overcome some of his past guilt, but from what we see, his journey still had room to continue.
Regardless of Atsuโs connection to Jin and whether we get more clues about the first game protagonistโs final fate, Yotei is shaping up to be highly enjoyable. The fun Legends co-op mode will be returning to Ghost of Yotei. However, like before, it wonโt be available immediately upon release. Ghost of Yotei is also set to feature a more vibrant open world and will focus more on exploration, addressing a common Ghost of Tsushima problem fans have. The game is set to release as a PS5 exclusive on October 2nd of this year.
