Calling Spider-Man: Brand New Day “successful” is a bit of an understatement. The film garnered glowing reviews from fans and critics alike, with many calling it the best Spider-Man outing so far and others praising it as a return to form for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Its box office earnings have been just as impressive: It beat Avengers: Endgame‘s opening day haul, set other early-run records, and quickly became one of Marvel’s most profitable movies ever. It hasn’t stopped making bank, either. Positive word of mouth has absolutely played a role in Brand New Day‘s success, but the real reason it’s raking in so much money is even simpler: People love Spider-Man. Not only that, but they adore Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, who somehow manages to be even more lovable, more relatable, and more inspiring than he was before. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that Brand New Day just broke one doozy of a box office record.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed $855 million at the domestic box office, meaning that, by tomorrow, it will have eclipsed Avengers: Endgame as the highest-grossing Marvel film ever. Globally, it has already passed $2.2 billion, trailing Endgame‘s worldwide take by $500 million. This may shock some, but it makes sense. Holland’s latest outing as Peter Parker/Spider-Man has exceeded just about every projection and expectation pundits and executives have put upon it, so it’s no surprise that it’s doing gangbusters on all fronts.
Will Avengers: Doomsday Top Spider-Man: Brand New Day At The Box Office?
With Brand New Day doing as well as it is, fans have started speculating about whether or not Marvel’s next big release will give Spidey a run for Disney’s money. The release in question is, of course, Avengers: Doomsday, the hotly anticipated fifth Avengers film and the debut of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Victor von Doom. Directed by MCU vets Joe and Anthony Russo, Doomsday also features the Fantastic Four, FOX’s original X-Men cast, and a whole bunch of cameos we won’t know about until the film hits theaters.
Avengers: Doomsday could potentially beat Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the box office, but it’s hard to say if it will or not. It has lots going for it, but so does Spidey. Spider-Man has ranked among Marvel’s most popular characters for so long for a reason, and few of the characters confirmed for Doomsday can match his relatability and wholesomeness. Sure, Chris Evans is coming back as Steve Rogers, but why? He received the perfect sendoff in the closing minutes of Endgame. He doesn’t need to come back. He’s definitely up there in terms of Marvel best, most morally secure superheroes, but his return feels forced and unnecessary.
On the other hand, Doomsday does have one asset Spidey doesn’t: fans’ curiosity. Ever since Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Doctor Doom, casual fans and diehards alike have wondered just how that’s going to work. The Russos have again demonstrated their ability to drum up a ludicrous amount of hype, and that could well be enough to dethrone Brand New Day. It’s also possible — but a bit less likely, in this writer’s opinion — that Endgame‘s upcoming theatrical re-release could beat Brand New Day. Again, though, it really could go either way, so we’ll just have to wait until the movie hits theaters.
