The Boys Spinoff That Fans Forgot About Finally Gets an Update They’ll Love

The Boys will wrap up when its fifth and final season premieres next year, but the franchise it spawned will continue to be a major part of Prime Video’s programming lineup. Already there’s been one spin-off series released, Gen V, and there are others in various stages of development. One of the more notable projects coming through the pipeline is The Boys: Mexico, which will be produced by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal. Things have been fairly quiet on that front since The Boys: Mexico was first announced in 2023, but fans will find the latest update to be very encouraging.

Speaking with Collider at the Gen V Season 2 premiere, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke addressed the status of the Mexico spinoff. “The pilot of [The] Boys: Mexico is being developed right now,” he said. “It’s very cool. I mean, who knows — obviously you never know, but I can say that the world itself meets the standard of all of our spinoffs. It’s our world but a totally different tone, and it’s super fun. Gael and Diego are executive producers, which is amazing and [they] really engaged with it, so — short answer is we’ll see, but I think the script is good.”

Spinoffs Like The Boys: Mexico Can Help the Franchise Grow in a New Era

Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) in the Andor Season 2 finale

There’s an argument to be made that The Boys is threatening to become the very thing it’s lampooning — a shared universe of various superhero TV shows — but given how successful the franchise has been for Prime Video, the streamer isn’t going to want to part ways with it soon. If The Boys is to stay alive after the mainline series ends, it’ll be important for subsequent projects to mix things up and find fresh spins on the formula. Fortunately, it sounds like that’s what’s happening with The Boys: Mexico. Kripke mentions a new tone, which implies the spinoff will have a different feel compared to other shows in the franchise.

The Boys: Mexico has a great creative team in place to pull something like this off. Luna, of course, is best known for his role as Cassian Andor in the Star Wars franchise. He just finished the critically acclaimed TV show Star Wars: Andor, which received widespread praise for its handling of mature themes and topics that pushed the property in exciting new directions. He knows better than most what it takes to inject some new life into a long-running property. It stands reason to believe he’ll find a way to ensure The Boys: Mexico feels familiar enough for established fans, but does enough to make its own mark.

Unfortunately, it sounds like The Boys: Mexico is still lingering in early development, which was the case last year when Kripke provided an update. Interestingly, he’s careful to not confirm the spinoff is actually happening. It sounds like a lot will depend on how development of the pilot goes. If the scripts don’t come together as envisioned, Prime Video could decide to pull the plug and explore another avenue to keep The Boys alive. But it’s encouraging to hear Kripke say The Boys: Mexico is actively being worked on. That’s a sign everyone involved is dedicated to making the series a reality and is doing all they can to ensure it’s the best show possible.

Hopefully, the next time Kripke speaks about The Boys: Mexico, he’s able to share something a bit more concrete. With the talent involved, the spinoff has the potential to be an exciting and worthwhile addition to the franchise, fleshing out The Boys universe with a fresh take on the property. It would be a shame if the show fell apart. After making a strong impression with Star Wars fans, it would be great to see Luna tackle another high-profile property.
