Bending fans were hoping for better news this holiday season when it came to Aang and his fellow Fire Nation fighters. Earlier this week, Paramount revealed that the long-awaited film that will focus on an adult Aang, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, won’t be coming to theaters as was originally planned. Instead, the movie will be released directly on Paramount+ on October 9th of next year. While the disappointing update did confirm actors Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Peta Sergeant, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan are joining the cast, a synopsis for the upcoming film might have been lost in the shuffle.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming animated film from Avatar Studios will focus on Aang discovering an ancient power that might just save the world: “The world’s last Airbender learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve.” So far, details surrounding this ‘ancient power’ remain a mystery, but it gives fans some more insight regarding what the aged-up Aang will be up to when he hits the screen next year.
Avatar Bends Away From Theaters

Paramount’s Head of Originals for Paramount+, Jane Wiseman, stated the following when it came to the upcoming release, teasing both Aang’s adventure and the next chapter in the franchise, Avatar: Seven Havens, “The Avatar Universe has captivated audiences for two decades, and Paramount+ is proud to be the exclusive streaming home for its beloved animated incarnation. The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender and Avatar: Seven Havens represent the next evolution of storytelling from Avatar Studios — bringing together remarkable talent both in front of and behind the camera to deliver the epic adventures and emotional depth fans have come to expect. These additions, alongside The Legend of Korra and the original series, solidify Paramount+ as the destination for the animated Avatar Universe.”
To date, The Legend of Aang has yet to release any footage, though this isn’t the first time that bending enthusiasts have seen adult Aang in action. During the sequel series, The Legend of Korra, there were various flashbacks that highlighted the Avatar years after the defeat of the Fire Lord and his army. While fans are disheartened that the protagonist won’t be hitting theaters, there are plenty of things to look forward to when it comes to the Nickelodeon franchise.
On top of Avatar: Seven Havens, the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender is slated to return with its second season next year, continuing the story of Aang and company as they bring the fight to Ozai. Already confirmed for a third season to wrap the overall story, it’s clear that the bending world has found a major audience, so long following its original debut.
