With Pokemon Scarlet and Violet approaching three years old, free Pokemon distributions have become the norm. Mystery Gift codes and new Tera Raids are the primary way Pokemon is keeping players engaged with the aging main series entry. But soon, Pokemon fans will have something new to play when Pokemon Legends: Z-A arrives this October. And that means the latest free Pokemon distribution announcement from The Pokemon Company looks a little different. Even though Legends: Z-A isn’t out yet, we already have the details on its first free Pokemon gift code.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A will arrive on October 16th for the Switch and Switch 2. But today, alongside releasing the latest Shiny Legendary for Scarlet & Violet, The Pokemon Company announced the first free Pokemon that will be given away in a special distribution for Legends: Z-A. According to reliable Pokemon site, Serebii, trainers will be able to get a code for a special Slowpoke in a Cherish Ball shortly after the release of Legends: Z-A.
How to Get the First Free Gift Code for Pokemon Legends: Z-A

This isn’t the most exciting Pokemon distribution we’ve ever seen, but it’s for a good reason. The Slowpoke giveaway in Pokemon Legends: Z-A is part of the celebrations for a new Pokemon Center opening. Specifically, the Kagawa Pokemon Center will be opening on October 24th, 2025. This is also when the new distribution starts, just a week after the release of Legends: Z-A. Slowpoke is the mascot of the Kagawa region, so the giveaway is very on-theme for the celebration.
To get the free Slowpoke in a Cherish Ball in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, trainers will need to do some legwork. The code will be given away at various Pokemon Centers in Japan, with the option to get it through Pokemon HOME or on paper. However, according to the instructions, you can’t just ask a Pokemon Center employee for the code. You’ll need to “imitate Slowpoke.” What that means is apparently up for imitation, but making a dopey facial expression will probably suffice.
The codes will be available in person at Pokemon Center locations in Japan starting on October 24th and running through November 30th. It’s likely each person will only be able to obtain one code, meaning that you won’t be able to get one from a friend if you don’t personally travel to a Pokemon Center location.

Some fans are hoping this might hint at an upcoming Mega Slowking reveal, since Mega Evolutions are so prominently featured in promo for Legends: Z-A. However, it’s likely that Slowpoke was chosen because it’s the Kagawa mascot, not for any secret teaser reasons. Regardless, this shows that the trend of oddly specific Pokemon distributions won’t be ending with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. We’ll have to wait until Legends: Z-A comes out to see exactly how redeeming codes works in the newest game, but it’s clear there will be some functionality there.
