Mister Sinister’s MCU Debut Is Perfectly Timed, but His Comics Evolution Could Be a Problem

Mister Sinister is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that is honestly way more shocking than it seems. Marvel Studios has announced the release date of the X-Men‘s next movie, with X-Men hitting theaters on May 5, 2028. Marvel has been announcing the cast for the last few weeks, with Adam Driver rumored for a part in the movie. Most of us thought it would be Magneto or someone of that stature, so we were shocked when it was revealed that he would be playing the most evil mutant geneticist in the Marvel Universe. It’s honestly kind of weird that we aren’t getting Magneto as the first X-villain, especially since we’re getting to many of the original five X-Men in the movie, but Sinister is an intriguing possibility.

Mister Sinister has become a legendary villain over the years, playing a massive role in the team’s history. He was immediately treated as a big deal and he was considered one of the top villains of the team from out of the gate, often named alongside the Mutant Master of Magnetism and Apocalypse as the trio of greatest X-bad guys. Over the last six years, the character has gotten a lot more spotlight than ever before, with readers getting to spend a lot of time with him. However, the current version of the character is very, very different from the one that first appeared all those years again and that could be a big problem for the character, his upcoming adaptation, and what it could mean for fans looking to learn more about the villain.

Mister Sinister’s Changes Over the Years Are Going to Muddy the Waters for MCU Fans

Mister Sinister has starred in some brilliant stories over the years and like most comic characters has changed a lot. The character was introduced in the mid ’80s as the shadowy manipulator behind the Marauders, a group of killers who destroyed the Morlocks in “Mutant Massacre”. It would be revealed that he was a mutant geneticist obsessed with the genomes of the Summers and the Greys, having created Jean Grey Madelyne Pryor so she could have a baby with Cyclops. This led to “Inferno”, the story that would define Sinister for years to come, as he tried to get his hands on Cyclops and Maddie’s child Nathan during a demonic invasion caused by his actions to get the baby driving Pryor insane.

Sinister was one of the biggest Marvel villains of the ’80s right away and creators would keep adding to the character as the years went by. Eventually, it would be revealed that he was much older than he seemed and had been working with and against Apocalypse for years. The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Jean Grey revealed that he was once Victorian geneticist Nathaniel Essex, who was manipulated by Apocalypse and became his servant for a time. He worked for years in the backgrounds to find the perfect mutant, meeting long-lived mutants like Mystique, Destiny, and Sabretooth, and it was later revealed that he had known Gambit before he joined the X-Men, having him show the Marauders the path into the Morlock Tunnels.

The best way to describe Sinister for years is just two words I’ve already used to describe him – “shadowy manipulator”. He really never had much of a personality beyond that. He was a powerful, cool-looking character, but he was as deep as a puddle. All he had was an aura of mystery. We knew where his stories were going to go when he showed up – if we’re being honest, for years his only legitimately great story was “Inferno”. All of this would change with “Everything Is Sinister”, which ran through Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 2) #1-4 in 2011. Suddenly, he had a much more campy, entertaining personality. Further appearances would keep that conception of the character and by the Krakoa Era, he was basically a competitor on RuPaul’s Drag Race in the best possible way.

His origin was also changed; he was no longer Essex but a clone of him, one of four created in a bid to allow Essex to figure out a way to become a Dominion, a godlike being from outside space and time. These changes to the character have been fantastic – stop what you’re doing and find a way to read all of Hellions, Immortal X-Men, and “Sins of Sinister”, then come back and finish this, finally forging him into a character that’s worthy of being considered in the same sentence as legends like Magneto and Apocalypse. However, it calls into question exactly what Sinister we’re going to see in the MCU – the shadowy manipulator or the drag queen.

X-Men ’97 Gives Us an Unfortunate Clue on the MCU’s Sinister’s Future

X-Men ’97 has been driving mainstream X-Men discourse since it dropped, even reaching into the comics (what, did you think all the ’90s nostalgia of the 2024 X-reboot “From the Ashes” was all organic?). The first season of the show brought back Mister Sinister to deal with the whole Madelyne Pryor story arc and it’s nothing like the extremely entertaining new version we’ve been seeing in the comics over the last few years. This was the standard shadowy manipulator Sinister, the one that existed for since the character’s debut, the one that we always expect to see. Sinister in the show was fine and it makes sense for the character to be more old school in X-Men ’97, but it’s also something that isn’t going to help anyone really enjoy the character if this is the Sinister we see in the MCU.

Mister Sinister was honestly a really boring character for years. He had no personality whatsoever and his character traits were mostly being afraid of Apocalypse to an extent and really, really wanting to experiment on Scott Summers. This is the version of the character everyone remembers and it’s one that needed to change. The new Sinister is more of a character than ever, more entertaining and fun, a villain that you can actually enjoy reading about. This would be a way more interesting version of the character for Diver to play, but knowing Marvel Studios, they’re going to go with the more boring, staid version of the character. Mister Sinister has become a better character than ever and the odds of seeing that version of the character on screen is unfortunately nil.
