Once a staple of the Hollywood landscape, the spoof movie is attempting to make a comeback. This summer saw the release of The Naked Gun, with Liam Neeson breathing new life into the classic action comedy franchise. That’s not the only legacy brand returning to theaters. Next summer sees the release of Scary Movie 6, the latest installment in the long-running horror parody series. What’s exciting about that project is it sees original franchise creators the Wayans brother reunite, and fans are eager to see which horror titles will be in their crosshairs this time around. Now, Marlon Wayans has shed some light on what audiences can expect.

In an interview with ComicBook to promote his new movie Him, Wayans discussed Scary Movie 6 and listed some recent hits that could get spoofed in the upcoming sequel. “I mean, you know, I’m just a fan of the whole genre, man,” he said. “I Know What You Did Last Summer may have something in there. I think the Scream franchise is always a great one. I think Heretic was a wonderful film. Longlegs. Get Out. Nope. There are just so many great horror films to pull from that we plan on having a field day. Sinners.”
Scary Movie 6 Is Arriving at the Perfect Time

Horror has always been a popular film genre (look no further than the long list of titles previously parodied by the Scary Movie franchise), but over the past several years, there’s been a wave of critically acclaimed horror movies that have made an impact at the box office and pop culture. Jordan Peele has emerged as a dynamic horror auteur with works like Get Out (which was nominated for Best Picture), Us, and Nope. Earlier this year, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners became a phenomenon, exceeding box office expectations and earning enthusiastic praise thanks to its deft blend of heady themes and entertaining genre thrills.

There arguably hasn’t been a better time for something like Scary Movie 6 to come to fruition. Not only is there a void to be filled in the marketplace (something that was highlighted in the positive reactions to The Naked Gun), the filmmakers have so much ripe material to choose from, and it should be very entertaining to see how Wayans and Co. lovingly spoof each target. All of the films he listed are very distinct and boast unique iconography and moments that could easily fit into the Scary Movie formula. Perhaps there will be a scene riffing on the now iconic hypnosis sequence from Get Out or a music-flavored set piece that evokes Sinners.
Wayans doesn’t mention Weapons, but it feels like a given that film will eventually be added to the list. Garnering widespread critical acclaim, Weapons dominated the box office throughout August. With elements like the running children and the terrifying Aunt Gladys, it’d be a missed opportunity if something from Weapons wasn’t worked into Scary Movie 6. The same can be said for The Conjuring Universe, which has established itself as one of horror’s most lucrative franchises in the time since 2013’s Scary Movie 5.
The rise of horror franchise legacy sequels will also give the Wayans brothers an opportunity to take Scary Movie back to its roots. The 2000 original drew heavily from Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, two properties that continue to release new installments. The fact that Scary Movie is returning after all these years as well provides ample ground for meta jokes, and it’ll be fun to see the complete package next summer.
